Summer Streets Returns to New York City: August 3, 10 & 17
By Wayne Sheppard
Once again, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) will close nearly seven miles of streets for Summer Streets, reserving these valuable public spaces for people to play, run, walk, and bike. The annual celebration provides space for healthy recreation and encourages more sustainable forms of transportation. Nearly 300,000 people took part in Summer Streets 2018.
The event takes place on August 3, 10, and 17—the first three Saturdays of the month. From 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Park Avenue and Lafayette Street will be closed to vehicles, creating a car-free space from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park. New Yorkers will have easy access from all points in the five boroughs.
The seven-mile route will feature five rest stops, hosting a variety of activities and experiences—music stages, a dog park, fitness classes, water activities, food, and more. All activities are free of charge and are designed for the enjoyment of people of all ages and ability levels.
