Metropolis Launches Webinar Series with Egress Education

At Metropolis Group, we are always looking for opportunities to provide clients with valuable, relevant information, whether educating them on the construction codes or providing clarification on confusing aspects of the code. Earlier this month, on April 5, 2022, we launched a webinar series that will explore some of the more challenging portions of the New York City construction codes. Code and Zoning Analyst John Lashley led the inaugural webinar with the first of a two-part series addressing egress.

Demystifying Means of Egress

“When they approached us about a webinar, the Technical Affairs team discussed what issues are prevalent,” said Lashley. “The foremost issue we encounter has to do with egress, which is overseen by both the Department of Buildings and the Fire Department.”

As many industry professionals know firsthand, failure to comply with egress requirements is a surefire way to rack up hefty city fines.

More than 100 attendees joined the initial 30-minute presentation, which started by defining means of egress and its components—an exit access, an exit, and an exit discharge. The webinar also included discussion of occupant load, egress width, and exit access. Lashley began by citing specific parts of the code and then offering examples to illustrate each section. He also called out changes in the 2022 code, which goes into effect in November 2022.

Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the webinar, as well as to email follow-up questions. In addition, Metropolis made the webinar available to attendees for 48 hours after the live event.
