Deadline Looms for NYC DOB Training Connect SST Cards
By Gregory Fortino
The deadline for new Site Safety Training (SST) cards is almost here.
Starting February 1, 2023, all SST cards must be issued through the NYC DOB Training Connect platform. These cards include a near-field communication (NFC) chip that can be scanned to affirm the card’s authenticity and prevent fraud.
Local Law 196 of 2017 Requirements
Per Local Law 196 of 2017, all construction and demolition workers on sites that require a Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator, or Site Safety Manager must have 40 hours of site safety training. DOB-approved course providers have issued SST cards through the NYC DOB Training Connect website since January 1, 2022. The online platform was launched to streamline the process of obtaining an SST card and reduce the likelihood of fraud.
Workers who completed site safety training before January 1, 2022, should contact the course provider who issued their SST cards to have them replaced with NYC DOB Training Connect SST cards by January 31, 2023. Starting February 1, 2023, on any work site that requires a DOB-license site safety professional, the workers must have the new cards.
Violations will be issued to the owner, permit holder, and employer, if applicable, for each worker who does not have an SST card issued by NYC DOB Training Connect.
