Buildings Must Display Energy Efficiency Rating Labels by October 31

Per Local Law 33 of 2018, as amended by Local Law 95 of 2019, owners of buildings on the NYC Benchmarking Covered Building List must post a Building Energy Efficiency Rating Label in a conspicuous location near each public entrance no later than October 31, 2020. Updated labels must be posted annually by October 31. The requirements apply to buildings that exceed 25,000 square feet and to multiple buildings on a lot that total at least 100,000 square feet.

The label will include both the building’s energy efficiency score, as calculated through the benchmarking tool, and an energy efficiency rating of A through F. Failure to post the label within 30 days after October 1 may incur a civil penalty of $1250.

Where to Access/Print the Building Energy Efficiency Label

Starting October 1, 2020, owners can access and print the label through a new Building Energy Efficiency Rating tab in the DOB NOW Public Portal. The label will not be mailed to building owners. Owners or owner representatives must download and print the label for posting.

Guidelines for Printing/Displaying

• The label can be printed on letter-sized (8½” x 11”) paper.
• The label may be printed in color (recommended) or grayscale.
• DOB recommends, but does not require, framing and/or laminating the label. All information included in the label should remain clearly visible for the entire year.
• Once printed, the label must be visible to the public, displayed either internally or externally in a conspicuous location near each public entrance.
• The label must be posted at a vertical height between four and six feet from the ground or floor.
• The label must not be damaged, camouflaged, or hidden from public view.
• The label must be displayed year-round and replaced annually with the latest version.
